It takes grit to make it through life. Grit is more than an idea. It’s a practice that can be applied every day, especially the tough ones. Once you know the recipe for grit, there’s nothing you can’t handle. Grit has many ingredients, but there are four main components: God, Resilience, Integrity, & Toughness.
The God component is about having faith that things will work out no matter what. Believing all things in life happen for a reason is having trust. Trust is the same as faith. Resilience means that no matter how many times you get knocked down, you get back up again. Taking a moment to have a pity party before bouncing back is a healthy approach to acknowledging our challenges. Welcoming a helping hand is part of our resilience. Integrity allows us to accept our difficulties without using them as excuses or becoming bitter. Maintaining gratitude and practicing kindness keep integrity alive. Toughness comes in the form of emotional, mental, and sometimes physical strength. Mental strength might be the most challenging ingredient to come by.
Life is always worth living, even on days that require ample amounts of grit. It takes God, Resilience, Integrity, and Toughness to accept and deal with what we didn’t ask for without becoming negative. Stir in some flexibility and creativity. Add a dash of humor. Let the concoction marinate for a while. Top with a heaping scoop of positivity, and sprinkle on some gratitude for extra measure. What you have before you is a recipe for grit.
There’s no single way to persevere. Everyone’s recipe box has a version of grit. Some are handed down by example. Change the recipe to highlight your strengths. Be grateful for the days when grit isn’t on the menu, and equally thankful you know the recipe.
