Where you live is your choice, be it beach, mountain, or city. The same is true for where you live in time, be it past, present, or future. We live where we are comfortable and sometimes stay there longer than we should. What happened is in the past. We are free to visit whenever we want, but we have already lived in it. The future will come. We don’t need to run to it. Here. Now. In the present is where we belong. Where do you live?
Even if the current state of your life isn’t how you imagined, give it a chance to unfold as it will. Let go of controlling every outcome and be surprised when life is different than you dreamed (it’s usually better). Savor the joy in this moment if that is what you feel. Take comfort in knowing that difficult times are temporary. Feel relief that if life isn’t what you want it to be, it won’t last forever. Notice the blessings. Identify what makes you grateful. Know what brings you fear. When you allow yourself to experience emotions as they enter your life, you are living in the present. What’s going on now is real. What happened previously is over and done. What is to come is speculation. Falling into what was or jumping into what will be is just as much of a choice as living in the present.
Changing the past or controlling the future is impossible. The result is insanity that robs you of today. The past may be familiar, or the future may appear exciting, but are you willing to miss out on here and now? Where you live is your choice, whether it be beach, mountain, city, or past, present, or future.
