Every trip requires at least some baggage. When packing, the goal is to be prepared, but at the same time, take only what’s necessary. What you bring has everything to do with the activities you’ve planned. Common sense leaves the snow boots behind for a beach trip. What gets thrown into the bag are the items you know you’ll need and a few “just-in-case items.” There’s no sense packing a heavy suitcase full of things you’d rather not be schlepping. Most of the time, there are a handful of items that never make it out of the suitcase.
Life is also a trip. Bring with you what you need, but realize you don’t need everything. Use discretion to lighten your load and be practical in what you commit to carrying around. Three suitcases packed to the brim are likely more than you’ll need. The effort to haul them around will likely ruin your trip. Ditch the emotional baggage that weighs you down; it is definitely not a “just-in-case item.”
No matter where you go or what you face, chances are you can obtain whatever you didn’t bring. Start with the fundamentals, the things you need every day: socks, pj’s, and underwear or a good attitude, gratitude, and an adventurous spirit. Throw in a swimsuit and a sense of humor. They might come in handy, and neither takes up much space. A sturdy pair of shoes is as essential as a flexible attitude. Remember, a rain jacket can spare you from sprinkles or protect you from a torrential downpour, but umbrellas are available everywhere.
Often, what you don’t pack or plan for is what makes the trip the most memorable. Take only what’s necessary. The rest will fall into place, making your trip more enjoyable.
