Even with all of the national and Hallmark holidays, there is one that I believe is missing. No, it’s not Superbowl Monday, though I doubt my idea will heed as much interest. Wouldn’t Make-A-difference Day be fantastic? One day a year dedicated to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. The officialness of the day is up to each individual who chooses to participate. What you do and when you do it is entirely up to you.
The amount and types of good deeds are limitless. Persons close to you, acquaintances, and strangers alike can all benefit from receiving kindness. Grand gestures or small tokens of thoughtfulness are equally welcome because spreading joy is the desired result. There is always time and room for more kindness in life. Make-A-Difference Day is about what we can offer one another, but there is much to be gained in the giving. Positive actions boost the spirits of the giver and the receiver. Little gestures send a message of, “You matter enough to me to acknowledge your need.” Offering a compliment or holding a door takes minimal effort but has a maximum effect because kindness is contagious.
Make-A-Difference Day is about how you want or can make a difference. Enrich your life by doing something nice for someone else. Mark your calendar and challenge yourself to how many acts of positivity you can perform. Be the reason people smile. The more good you do, the more habit-forming your deeds become. They might even have a pay-it-forward effect. The world can always use more reasons to be happy. If a single person can offer a dozen reasons in a day, think of how much of a difference we can collectively make.
I look forward to celebrating this new holiday with you.
