Once upon a time, there was a fisherman. He was very successful at fishing but wondered if there was more to life than what the sea had to offer him. He wanted to know of his happiness in advance. The next time he was in port, he visited a fortune teller. The fortune teller waved her hands over her crystal ball and told the fisherman what she saw: “You will weather many storms. Be wise in which you take shelter. You will know love and riches if you don’t become greedy. Lastly, you will lose your sight.”
All of this was good, except for the last bit. Deciding to ignore the part he didn’t want to hear, the fisherman returned to his boat to pursue the fortune teller’s promises. After many years, he returned to the fortune teller to tell her how wrong she had been about her predictions. ” I have weathered many storms but have taken shelter from none. I have less money now than when I first came to see you. My life has no love, and you were wrong about my sight. I can see just fine!”
“If you are finished, may I explain how wrong you are?” asked the fortune teller. “When you left here, your sight was the first thing you lost. You became so consumed with wealth you failed to see how rich you already were.” As the fortune teller continued to explain, the fisherman began to understand.
Casting his net into the water was his livelihood and love. Abandoning his passion to become rich as a salesman meant he had lost sight of his heart. After asking the fortune teller for forgiveness, the fisherman returned to his small boat. He was ready to catch his dreams in the reflection of the sea.
