Running down the dirt hiking trail, my (then) two-year-old daughter tripped and fell on her little face. Before I could even reach her, she popped up with blood streaming down her forehead, pumped her fist in the air, and shouted, “Yee-haw, all girl!” She has always been one tough and undeterred cookie. My wish for all women is that no matter how hard we fall, we get back up and persevere.
March 8th is International Women’s Day (IWD). Celebrating women’s contributions and equality on a global scale started in the early 1900s. Over a century later, IWD is still as honored as ever. As a mother of two daughters, it has been important to me to encourage their self-confidence and promote their determination. Knowing one’s self-worth has to come from within. No external source can identify or nullify a person’s value.
Men and women face different challenges in life. There will always be stumbling blocks. As women, we must remind ourselves that our obstacles are not insurmountable despite seeming unfair. Honoring ourselves and our predecessors by celebrating International Women’s Day acknowledges our importance in the world. It isn’t about how far we have to go. It’s about how far we’ve come. Our achievements today are built upon the shoulders of the brave and determined women who came before us. Our shoulders will serve as the foundation for those who follow.
On March 8th, don your purple, green, and white and join the IDW celebrations. Here is a link with more information. https://www.internationalwomensday.com/About. With my fist in the air, I’m cheering all you beautiful women, “Yee-Haw, All Girl!”
