While loading a Teflon pan into the dishwasher the other day, I noticed the label “Dishwasher Safe, Handwashing Recommended.” It got me thinking about how often people choose convenience over care. Humans take the easy route over what is better when given the chance. The rush to accomplish as many tasks as possible fuels our need for instant gratification. Rather than spend a few extra moments taking better care of our things, we opt for expedience. Productivity over longevity. Quantity over quality. There are times when taking our time has its advantages.
This kind of behavior extends beyond materialistic items. How we treat ourselves and others is also affected. Fast or processed food instead of home-cooked meals is not uncommon. Eating quickly becomes the priority. We drive when we can walk and text versus talk. Why leave our houses when the internet offers effortless shopping? Days are more productive, but are they more meaningful? Time-saving measures are not all bad, but sometimes, taking an extra few minutes sends a meaningful message of thoughtfulness. Knowing someone went out of their way for you makes one feel more cared for, yourself included. Nurturing yourself and those around you is a form of self-care. Self-care is not a matter of convenience. It’s a matter of prioritizing.
There’s no harm in putting the plates and silverware in the dishwasher or even the occasional pan. Handwashing takes a little more time, but it keeps the items in good condition longer. So, the next time you encounter a “Dishwasher Safe, Handwashing Recommended” situation, choose wisely. The extra effort might be worth it in the long run.
