Though the presents are all unwrapped there is one more. Since it can’t be put under the tree, placed in your hands, or delivered to your door, it has probably gone unnoticed. I will bring it to your attention, but what you do with it is up to you. I am referring to the gift of time.
As we approach the dawn of a new year we are faced with the idea of three-hundred and sixty-five days spread before us. Days that are filled with promises we make to ourselves of things we are going to do, achieve, change. Good intentions of resolutions for self-improvement move to center stage. For a while goals are pursued whole heartedly. In the excitement of turning a new page we mustn’t forget that the time laid before us doesn’t come with a guarantee. Assumptions for a tomorrow can vanish before the clock strikes midnight. Time is a gift, not a promise.
Gifts are meant to be unwrapped, enjoyed, and treasured. Do not waste your gift being complacent, thinking it will be there tomorrow. What if it isn’t? Would you ignore a present with your name on it, leaving it on the doorstep for someone else to take? Perhaps it is perishable, and by the time you get around to the package its contents have withered or rotted.
Make the most of the time you are given not because it is a new year, but because it is a gift to yourself. Discover the beauty of each day by honoring your intentions. Rise to the challenges you face. Accept the setbacks. Allow yourself to recharge. Find gratitude in the unexpected. Be grateful for the adventures and the sorrows. Learn from the lessons. Live like there is no tomorrow. Most importantly, enjoy unwrapping each day.
