Life can be incredibly disappointing at times. People work hard for what they think they deserve only to be left wanting more. The want for more money, more accolades, more opportunities, or more breaks is never ending. Wanting more isn’t a bad thing as long as some “Rolling Stone Wisdom” is applied to situations. The Stones might be an old bunch of rock stars now, but the drugs didn’t override the common sense they had in their youth. They knew, “You can’t always get what you want… You get what you need.” Those might be the truest words to ever have escaped Mick’s large lips.
Do any of us ask for the tough stuff in life? Of course not. It’s usually in the tough times that we get what we need. Blessings can be hard to see when the chaos of life kicks up, but they’re there. What you want, and what you get can be very different. Getting what you need is the gift, recognizing it as such is the key. Admitting that our desires are not what’s best for us can be challenging unless we are willing to let go of our need to be right. Life has a way of giving us what we need. When we allow ourselves to take things as they come we get what we need and perhaps even more than we wanted. Disappointment is usually all we end up with when we exclusively chase our wants and ignore the signs of our needs.
Apply a little “Rolling Stone Wisdom” to your life. As they say, “if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.” Let’s stop looking for what we think we want and “find” what it is we truly need. Our happiness just might depend on it.
