Years ago, a friend gave me a card that read, “I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world.” With or without princess attire, I’ve never had illusions of saving the world, but damn, if I don’t try to make the world a better place through acts of kindness. You can’t go wrong when you act with compassion. Lending a helping hand fills my heart. Knowing I made someone’s day brighter gives me hope that they’ll pay it forward to someone else.
I do it for the benefit of others and remind myself not to allow my expectation of a seat at the table. My belief is that sharing kindness should be done without strings attached. The personal rewards of being kind are immeasurable, but not at all why I choose to go out of my way for others. An ounce of kindness is as exciting as a handful of confetti.
No one can save the world, not with a cape and a nice tiara, not even with a magic wand. But we can touch lives by spreading joy, love, and kindness. That has to count for something. I guarantee that if you ponder how much more you could offer of yourself, you will find more than a fist full of confetti in your palm. The world can be a better place for everyone through simple acts of kindness. Giving each other reasons to be thankful spreads kindness and keeps the human spirit alive. Kindness might be the key to saving the world.
