We have all heard of the windows and doors of opportunity. There are windows of opportunity. When one door closes another opens. Opportunity knocks, is another. What these familiar phrases don’t identify is the personal call to action. Opening the window or answering the knock is a choice. Windows and doors don’t open themselves. Opportunity doesn’t barge in, her timing is unpredictable, and she doesn’t wait forever. She’ll move on if ignored. Sometimes we are better off not answering her call for attention. At other times her sudden presence is impeccable. Either way there is a choice to be made.
The point is that we all have decisions to make based on what is right for us individually. A knock is heard, a door is opened, maybe you walk through, maybe you don’t. When a door shuts there is usually good reason, but they don’t shut themselves. Throwing open the sash of a window lets in the fresh air, but sometimes the weather (or the opportunity) just isn’t right, and it’s better to close the window. Closure doesn’t always equal finality. Not all opportunities are once in a lifetime situations. Opportunity will return, and when she does the temperature might be more comfortable to let her stay.
Life has many windows and doors of opportunity. Be honest with yourself in your choices regarding opportunity. Which ones let in the most sunlight?
