Once upon a time, life gave me what most would call a nightmare. At the encouragement of others, I turned the nightmare into a dream and wrote a book about the experience. But what is it called when a dream I’ve never imagined comes true? I can only think a blessing is what you call that. It was one such blessing that found me in Times Square recently, staring at the cover of my debut book Pink Elephants, displayed on the NASDAQ Billboard! After winning a gold award from The Book Fest, I was notified as being one of a few winning authors to be included in a video montage for the billboard. I never dreamed of such an honor. New York City is to authors what Los Angeles is to screen actors. It is THE place you want to have your work seen.
With all of the billboards competing for attention who knows whether or not anything will come of the exposure. One thing is for sure though, I will continue to count my blessings, share my writing, and keep dreaming. The experience has been equal parts surreal and validating to me as an author. Changing careers from interior designer to writer was a leap of faith but one that I am thankful to have made. If my writing stories connects people through word and emotion then I’m doing my job. When I can hold a lens for readers to see the world from another perspective then I’m living my dream.
Perhaps I should dream a little bigger, if dreams I’ve never imagined are coming true. Notoriety is not a dream of mine, but writing is. I am learning that dreams come true whether you’re dreaming or not, because blessings abound. And life is full of undeniable blessings.
