Zelda Fitzgerald said, “No one has ever measured, even poets how much a heart can hold.” I think Zelda was talking about a mother’s heart, specifically. A mother is the person who’s heart can endure just about anything for her child.
If it weren’t for mothers none of us would be here. It takes more than a pregnancy to be a mother though. Biology is not a prerequisite to be a mom. Mothers are the women who love us unconditionally and forever. They are the women who can see our potential, and do whatever it takes to help us achieve it. They encourage us to become the people we are meant to be. Mothers are supportive even when they want something different for their child.
Hard as it may be, a mother willingly watches as her child makes mistakes, recognizing she can only hope they learn from the experience. A mother never tires of wiping a tear, or mending a hurt, but understands she can’t fix everything. The sparkle she wears of being a proud parent, replaces any desires she may have had for a more glamourous career. The pride of a mother is when she sees her child make their own happiness. She does not compete for accolades, but shares in the victories of her child’s accomplishments. Her heart fills with gratitude when her children return, if only briefly.
Mothers know us intimately, love us fiercely, and without end. They are the first person to love us and the last to leave us. No one knows how much a heart can hold, but the heart of a mother seems boundless. We grow up, but we never outgrow the need for a mother. This Mother’s Day celebrate the amazing women in your life, mother’s, grandmothers, step-mothers, adoptive mothers, and those who are mother-like.
