Surprisingly, the most common question I have received after the publication of Pink Elephants, has been, “How did you and Tyler manage to stay married?” The most honest answer I can offer is communication and respect. We verbalized and granted one another the space each of us needed during our family’s time of crisis. When one felt weak the other tried to be strong. That’s how we’ve always functioned. Just because we are married doesn’t mean we don’t have to get vulnerable with one another. Communication is hard and uncomfortable at times. The more stress there is in life the more difficult it is to identify feelings and needs, making communication that much more of a challenge. To become good at anything takes practice.
